In 1944, Tennessee Williams wrote an American classic play based on a family who dared to dream titled The Glass Menagerie. The story was largely focused on a main character who collected and cared for miniature glass figurines of all animal shapes and sizes.

In modern-day Willis, Texas, John and Suzonne Lawrence set out to build more than a collection of animals—they cultivated a way of life rooted in responsibility, hard work, and connection to the land where their children were raised. What began with a single lamb, gradually grew into a working barn that became home to two donkeys, two goats, eight chickens, and an immeasurable amount of love. The care of these animals became an all-encompassing passion project for them that their family strives to carry forward in Suzonne's absence.

Working outdoors and caring for animals played a pivotal role in shaping the younger generation of the Lawrence family. Suzonne's daughter raised pigs throughout her adolescence while her, alongside her niece who cared for and loved riding horses. Suzonne's son learned at an early age the importance of animals as he grew up alongside them. They learned firsthand the discipline, patience, and accountability required to nurture another living being. These experiences fostered resilience, empathy, and a strong work ethic — qualities that extend beyond agriculture and into every aspect of life. Through early mornings, daily chores, and hands-on responsibility, the children developed character, confidence, and the rewards that come with.

Our Mission

Inspired by these formative experiences, The Grass Menagerie was created with the goal of offering the same opportunities for growth and character development to the broader community. The Foundation seeks to support and enrich youth development by partnering with local FFA chapters, providing resources and hands-on agricultural experiences that encourage leadership, responsibility, and a strong connection to the outdoors. Through meaningful work outside, we aim to help cultivate the next generation of capable, compassionate, and community-minded individuals.

We appreciate your interest and participation of supporting the local youth!

Name Credit

Credit for the name “The Grass Menagerie” is given to Suzonne’s Tribe. A collection of women from all walks of life who were close friends and vintage glamping road warriors with Suzonne that all care deeply for each other. Naturally, upon hearing that she began her foray into hobby farming, the tribe gifted Suzonne the “Grass Menagerie” sign that hangs on the door of the barn. The name has since stuck and will continue to live on as a place for people and animals to gather in her absence.
